Guardacantón mural

A «GUARDACANTÓN» is a stone or wooden post that was used to protect the corners of buildings from being scraped by carriages.

Painted on the façade of Tabanco El Pasaje by Samuel Martínez (@Pol_art) in April 2025.

The original oil on canvas, created by the Romantic artist José Jiménez Aranda in 1878 and for which he received major national awards, depicts an 18th-century bandit looking defiantly at the viewer, leaning on a street corner.

The original painting is housed in the art gallery of Bodegas Tradición, at Calle Cordobeses 3 in Jerez de la Frontera, and may be visited alongside more than three hundred works by renowned masters such as Murillo, Zurbarán, Velázquez, Goya, El Greco, Madrazo, Sorolla and Valdés Leal.

José Jiménez Aranda (Seville 1843–1903) lived in Rome, Paris and Madrid. He was married to a woman from Jerez de la Frontera and spent several years living in our city, where he contributed to the design and restoration of the stained-glass windows of the Church of San Miguel.

His works are exhibited at the Prado Museum, the Thyssen Museum and other major museums around the world, as well as in numerous public and private collections.
